Texas Six Shooter - The World's Largest Six Shooter in Del Rio, Texas

World’s Largest Six Shooter

This iconic sculpture stands as a testament to the Lone Star State’s rich history and cowboy culture, captivating both locals and tourists alike.

In the heart of Del Rio, Texas, stands a colossal testament to the Lone Star State’s rich cultural heritage and larger-than-life spirit—the Texas Sixshooter. Crafted by renowned artist Bob “Daddy-O” Wade, this monumental sculpture proudly claims the title of the “World’s Largest Six Shooter,” capturing the essence of Texas in a single, awe-inspiring piece of art.

A Symbol of Texas Pride

After completing installation of the world’s largest cowboy boots at the North Star Mall in San Antonio in 1980, Wade made a visit to Del Rio in July 1981. He was giving an artist’s lecture next door at the Firehouse when it was suggested Wade create a sculpture for the city. Well, lucky for us, he spotted an empty concrete base next to our shop that looked to be the perfect location. Soon, the world’s largest “Texas Sixshooter” stood tall for all of Del Rio to see and enjoy.

The six-shooter, a quintessential symbol of the Wild West, is magnified to an extraordinary scale, making a bold statement about the larger-than-life spirit of Texas.

Paying Homage to the Iconic Colt Peacemaker

Situated prominently in Downtown Del Rio, the Texas Sixshooter has become a symbol of Texas pride and a must-see attraction for both locals and visitors. Standing at an impressive height of 13 feet, the sculpture serves as a striking representation of the Colt Single Action Army, a legendary revolver often referred to as the “Peacemaker”. The sculpture meticulously captures the distinctive features of this iconic firearm, known for its widespread use during the American Wild West era.

The Colt Single Action Army, introduced in 1873, became one of the most celebrated handguns in history. Its robust design, ease of use, and powerful .45 caliber ammunition made it a favorite among cowboys, lawmen, and outlaws alike. The Texas Sixshooter pays homage to this historic firearm with careful attention to detail, mirroring the recognizable shape of the Colt Single Action Army’s barrel, hammer, trigger guard, and grip.

Nestled in the heart of Downtown Del Rio, Texas stands a monumental tribute to an icon. Bob Wade’s larger-than-life interpretation of the Colt Single Action Army in the “Texas Sixshooter” sculpture is a testament to the enduring significance of this revolver in Texas’ cowboy culture and frontier heritage. The exaggerated proportions add a touch of artistic flair, transforming the sculpture into a symbol that not only captures the essence of the Old West but also stands as a monumental tribute to the legendary firearm that played a pivotal role in shaping that era.

Construction and Design of the Texas Sixshooter

Crafted from found materials, this oversized revolver stands tall with meticulous attention to detail, showcasing Bob Wade’s dedication to his craft and the spirit of the Old West.

Scrap plywood was used for the frame, metal pipe for the skeleton attaching to the base, a 55 gallon drum for the cylinder, stove pipe for the barrel, and stucco for the pearl handle. Inside, the grip was filled with pages of the local newspaper, later becoming a time capsule of sorts. The barrel and frame was painted silver, and the grip was painted white. It’s these details that make the Texas Sixshooter a unique marvel of construction and design.
